New Delhi, September 8 (NationPress) As the Vice Presidential election date of September 9 draws near, both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition INDIA bloc have expressed strong assurances regarding their candidates, creating a backdrop for this much-anticipated political showdown.
The NDA has put forth Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as its official candidate. Party officials are exuding confidence in his success, highlighting his extensive background in constitutional roles. In contrast, the Opposition INDIA bloc, which has recently nominated retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, is hopeful for an upset victory.
BJP MP Ghulam Ali Khatana called upon all members of Parliament to prioritize the nation's welfare in their voting decisions.
“C.P. Radhakrishnan boasts considerable experience, having served in several constitutional positions. I urge all parliamentarians to back him,” he stated in an interview with IANS.
Another BJP leader, S. Prakash, mirrored this confidence, asserting, “Our candidate's victory is inevitable. The only uncertainty is the margin of his win.”
Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjay Nishad also shared his optimism about the upcoming election, stating, “Upon the NDA's selection of Radhakrishnan, I extended my congratulations for his certain victory. We have substantial support, and the Opposition should recognize that constitutional roles transcend politics. Despite their candidate, we firmly believe in our win.”
Leaders from Janata Dal (United), Ram Nath Thakur and Neeraj Kumar, reiterated their support for Radhakrishnan.
Kumar, the spokesperson for JD(U), emphasized the Vice President's critical role, stating, “While the central government sought an all-party agreement, the Opposition opted out. We now face each other in this democratic election, and we are confident of raising the victory flag. The Vice President will play a crucial role in upholding the constitution and representing the populace in the upper chamber.”
JD(U) leader Ram Nath Thakur remarked, “In a democracy, elections are integral, and we are in favor of the NDA's vice presidential candidate. The entire NDA will cast their votes for him. His victory is assured.”
On the Opposition's side, Congress MP Imran Masood suggested that the NDA's anxiety arises from the INDIA bloc's formidable preparations.
“Their multiple strategy meetings indicate that our readiness is causing them concern,” he noted.
RJD spokesperson Mritunjay Tiwari stated, “Our candidate, B. Sudershan Reddy, is destined for victory, and the NDA's candidate will face defeat.”
The current electorate comprises 239 Rajya Sabha MPs and 542 Lok Sabha MPs, totaling 781 eligible voters, with the majority threshold set at 391. The NDA holds 425 MPs, which positions BJP's choice, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, as a frontrunner on paper.
Since announcing Radhakrishnan as their candidate on August 17, the NDA has been diligently engaging with MPs to solidify support. Radhakrishnan himself has embarked on a vigorous campaign, meeting parliamentarians throughout various states and in Delhi to advocate for his candidacy.
In response, the Congress-led INDIA bloc has chosen retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, aiming to exploit any potential divisions within the NDA and garner Opposition votes.
