What Happened to Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani?

Ahmedabad, June 12 (NationPress) Authorities have confirmed the tragic passing of Vijay Rupani, a prominent leader of the BJP and former Chief Minister of Gujarat, who was involved in the catastrophic Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. He was 68 years old.

Rupani was traveling on the Air India flight AI171, destined for London’s Gatwick Airport, when it tragically went down shortly after departure from Ahmedabad. Reports indicate he occupied a business class seat, 2D.

A seasoned statesman, Rupani held the position of the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat from August 2016 until September 2021. Recognized for his calm demeanor and decisive administrative approach, he guided Gujarat through a pivotal period of industrial expansion and recovery following the Covid-19 crisis.

His administration focused on boosting investments, enhancing infrastructure, and implementing social welfare initiatives.

Born on August 2, 1956, in Rangoon (presently Yangon, Myanmar), Rupani and his family relocated to Rajkot, Gujarat, amid political unrest in Southeast Asia. He graduated with a B.A. and L.L.B. from Saurashtra University and became actively engaged with the RSS and student politics through its student organization, the ABVP. His political career began when he was elected as a municipal corporator in Rajkot in 1987.

He served as the Mayor of Rajkot from 1996 to 1997 and was repeatedly elected to the Gujarat Assembly. His unwavering loyalty to the BJP and his reputable image made him a pivotal figure in Gujarat's political landscape. In August 2016, he was appointed to succeed Chief Minister Anandiben Patel upon her resignation.

Rupani remained in office after the 2017 Assembly elections, navigating through tumultuous challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and significant shifts in industrial policy. During his tenure as CM, he was credited with launching the “Digital Seva Setu” initiative aimed at reducing digital divides in rural regions, and he prioritized improved water management through the “Sujalam Sufalam” Jal Abhiyan.

His administration also unveiled the Gujarat Industrial Policy 2020 and various initiatives aimed at uplifting tribal communities. He resigned from the CM role in September 2021, paving the way for Bhupendra Patel as part of a strategy to rejuvenate leadership ahead of upcoming state elections. Despite stepping down, Rupani remained a vital advisor and continued to engage actively in party matters and community service.

Rupani was married to Anjali Rupani, a dedicated social worker and philanthropist. They had one son together.

He was recognized for his gentle nature, disciplined living, and profound spiritual roots, frequently visiting temples and engaging in religious and cultural ceremonies throughout Gujarat.
