On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, tragically crashed 32 seconds after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The aircraft, bound for London, unexpectedly lost altitude and crashed into a hostel block of B.J. Medical College in the Meghani Nagar region, resulting in a catastrophic fire.
A total of 242 individuals were on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Sadly, 241 lives were lost, along with 19 fatalities on the ground. The sole survivor was British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who had minor injuries. Former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the victims.
At 68 years old, Rupani served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021 and was traveling to London with his wife to visit their daughter. His remains were identified through DNA analysis and returned to his family.
Preliminary findings from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) indicate a loss of thrust in both engines, attributed to fuel control switches unexpectedly shifting from the “RUN” to “CUTOFF” position shortly after takeoff. The cause of this switch movement remains under investigation.
