Kolkata, March 27 (NationPress) Five police personnel, including a Deputy Commissioner, sustained injuries during a confrontation with local villagers in West Bengal's Burdwan district following the discovery of a youth's body under mysterious circumstances on Thursday.
Upon receiving the report, the police arrived and, adhering to protocol, transported the deceased youth Pallab (22) for a post-mortem examination.
Tensions escalated when Pallab's family expressed anger over the police's actions, alleging they were not informed prior to the body being taken.
This unrest provoked local villagers, who subsequently vandalized nearby homes, shops, and damaged bicycles and motorcycles.
As a police contingent, along with Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Gupta from the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, arrived to manage the situation, they were met with hostility as villagers attacked and hurled stones.
Several officers were hurt in the melee, and Gupta suffered a blow to his forehead. In response, law enforcement executed a lathi charge to disperse the rowdy crowd.
Witnesses relayed to the police and media that Pallab had been involved with a local married woman. On Wednesday night, he visited her home and was subsequently locked in a room by her husband.
Pallab's body was found in the same room where he had been confined the next morning.
The police have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
"Initial indications suggest that the youth may have taken his own life due to concerns about social stigma. However, the definitive cause will be established once the post-mortem results are available," stated a police official.
During a press briefing, Gupta remarked: "Our primary responsibility is to recover the victim's body and deliver it to the medical facility. We have fulfilled that duty."
He also reported that five police personnel, himself included, were injured during the incident.
"The situation is now stabilized," Gupta confirmed.
