Chennai, June 8 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday declared a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family of a worker who tragically lost his life in a fire at a private explosives manufacturing facility in Mettukundu village, located in the Virudhunagar district.
The deceased, Sangili, aged 45, son of Mokkaichami and a resident of Therku Street, Kullursandhai in Aruppukottai, suffered severe burn injuries from the incident and later passed away at the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital.
In his statement, Stalin expressed that he was “deeply pained” by this unfortunate incident and extended his sincere condolences to the grieving family. The compensation will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
The fire erupted around Saturday afternoon at the facility, which is situated in Mettukundu, a village known for its numerous licensed fireworks and explosives units. Initial reports indicate that the fire might have been caused by the improper handling of volatile materials during production, although an official investigation is currently in progress.
Fire and rescue services swiftly responded to the scene, managing to control the blaze and prevent further injuries.
This incident has reignited concerns regarding safety violations and inadequate enforcement of industrial regulations within the fireworks and explosives sector, particularly in the Virudhunagar region — a locale notorious for frequent accidents in its bustling yet hazardous pyrotechnics industry. The area has experienced several fatal incidents in recent years, leading to repeated calls for stricter safety regulations and enhanced oversight.
Authorities have initiated a probe into the fire's cause, and the district administration has been instructed to examine the compliance status of all active units in the area.
In parallel, local activists and labor unions are urging the government to increase inspections and guarantee safer working conditions for employees in these high-risk sectors. The Chief Minister assured that necessary actions would be taken against those found negligent and reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring worker safety.
