Kochi, Jan 6 (NationPress) Former Kerala Public Works Department (PWD) Minister and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Vice-President, V.K. Ibrahim Kunju, has sadly departed from this world on Tuesday.

At the age of 73, Kunju was a four-time legislator who had stepped back from public life due to health issues since 2021.

He was receiving medical care at a private hospital in Kochi following a long illness.

Recognized throughout Kerala's political landscape as a soft-spoken and unassuming leader, Kunju made his mark through diligent organization-building rather than through grandiose speeches.

His modest demeanor and approachability garnered him respect across party lines.

Regarded as the IUML's leading representative in Central Kerala, he played a crucial role in helping the party broaden its political influence in an area traditionally viewed as largely centered in Malappuram district.

Kunju served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) multiple times, representing the Kalamassery and Mattancherry constituencies from 2001 to 2021.

As the PWD Minister from 2011 to 2016 under the Oommen Chandy-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government, he oversaw a significant era of road and bridge development in the state, launching and executing several key infrastructure projects.

Born on May 20, 1952, near Aluva in Ernakulam district, Kunju started his journey in public life through student politics.

He gradually climbed the ranks within the IUML, serving as the Ernakulam district general secretary and later as the state secretary.

In addition, he remained active in the trade union movement, forming close ties with grassroots workers.

Congress Working Committee member A.K. Antony expressed his condolences, highlighting Kunju's popularity and his conscious decision to maintain a low profile throughout his career, which will be remembered for his simplicity and humility.

However, Kunju's later political years were marred by controversy surrounding the Palarivattom flyover case.

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau had arrested him at a private hospital in Kochi concerning allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure as PWD Minister.

The issue arose after the flyover exhibited significant structural faults within a year of its inauguration, eventually resulting in its decommissioning and reconstruction.

He is survived by his wife, Nadeera, and sons—Advocate V.E. Abdul Gafur, Abbas, and Anoop.

The final rites are scheduled to take place here on Wednesday.
