Health Status of Kerala MLA Uma Thomas Shows Improvement as She Welcomes the New Year

Kochi, Jan 1 (NationPress) The medical board overseeing Congress legislator Uma Thomas informed on Wednesday that her health condition is showing signs of improvement, and she has conveyed a Happy New Year message to her son.

Dr Krishnanunni Polakulathhe, the leader of the medical team at the private hospital where she is currently on a ventilator, confirmed that upon seeing her son, she wished him a Happy New Year.

“Today marks her third day in the hospital. Overall, her condition is improving, and the X-ray of her lungs indicates positive progress. The current challenge is determining when she can be gradually taken off the ventilator, which must be done cautiously. She reports experiencing pain, and we are striving to minimize it,” stated Dr Polakulathhe.

“The key issue is how many more days she will need to remain on the ventilator. Presently, the ventilator occasionally pauses to allow her to breathe independently, which she is able to do. We are planning the process of weaning her off the ventilator. A comprehensive medical board meeting took place, and the state government-appointed medical board has expressed satisfaction with our management of her case. Significant progress is evident as she has begun to move her arms and legs, although she does not recall the incident when I inquired,” the treating doctor elaborated.

The unfortunate event transpired on Sunday evening at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, managed by the CPI(M)-controlled Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). Uma Thomas stumbled over a barricade near the VIP section after exchanging greetings with State Culture Minister Saji Cherian.

This accident occurred during an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for a mass dance event featuring approximately 12,500 participants. The incident has ignited a blame game, prompting authorities to investigate the event's organization.

Speaking to IANS, Minister Cherian recounted witnessing her fall firsthand.

“We were all seated together, and she was returning to her seat after exchanging pleasantries with me. It all happened so quickly, and I was shocked to see her fall. The intense noise from the ongoing dance event made it difficult for those who noticed her fall to raise an alarm, but she was promptly attended to and taken to the hospital. There was grass on either side of where she fell, but unfortunately, her head struck the concrete floor. I also visited the hospital and struggled to sleep that night after witnessing the dreadful accident,” stated Cherian.

Uma Thomas, the widow of esteemed Congress leader P.T. Thomas, represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency. She ventured into politics following her husband's passing in December 2021 and won the by-election by a margin exceeding 25,000 votes, surpassing expectations of a Left victory.

A former student leader during her college days, Uma is recognized for her courteous demeanor and well-informed speeches in the Assembly. As the sole female Congress legislator in the current Assembly, she occupies a notable and symbolic role within her party.
