Kerala: Congress MLA Uma Thomas hospitalized and on ventilator after stage fall

Kochi, Dec 29 (NationPress) Congress MLA Uma Thomas has been placed on ventilator support at a private hospital following her fall from the stage on the first floor during a function at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday evening.

She had arrived at the event to witness a record-breaking dance performance.

After greeting State Culture Minister Saji Cherian while proceeding to her seat in the VIP section, she stumbled over a barricade and fell approximately 15 feet.

Eyewitnesses reported that she was bleeding from her head and nose due to the force of the fall.

Thanks to a medical team present at the venue, she was swiftly transported to a nearby private hospital.

Her condition is serious, and the medical team is diligently attending to her, as confirmed by hospital authorities.

Uma Thomas, the spouse of the late Congress leader P.T. Thomas, currently represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency.

P.T. Thomas passed away in 2021, prompting the Congress party to nominate Uma, who had been an active Congress student leader during her college years.

In the by-election shortly after her husband's death, she achieved a remarkable victory.

She secured victory by over 25,000 votes, surprising many, especially after the Left coalition, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, had mounted an aggressive campaign with candidate Joe Joseph, a renowned interventional cardiologist, aiming to break the Congress stronghold in Thrikkakara.

Notably, P.T. Thomas had represented Thrikkakara since 2016 and won the 2021 elections before his demise in December 2021.

He previously represented the Idukki Lok Sabha constituency from 2009 to 2014 and had won twice from the Thodupuzha Assembly constituency.

Following her electoral success, the Congress party welcomed its first female legislator in the current Assembly.

Uma is recognized for her courteous demeanor and well-researched speeches in the Assembly.
