Condition of Congress Legislator Uma Thomas Shows Positive Progress, to Remain in ICU

Kochi, Jan 8 (NationPress) After suffering severe injuries from a 15-foot fall at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Congress' inaugural Kerala legislator, Uma Thomas, has shown remarkable improvement on the 10th day of her recovery. On Wednesday, she was able to communicate with her office staff and issue essential directives.

According to a post from her official social media account, for the first time on Tuesday, she managed to rise from her bed and sit in a chair.

After a visit from her son, Vishnu, on Wednesday, she requested a conference call with her office team, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that her office remains operational and that community needs are addressed.

She instructed that if any higher-level intervention is required, fellow party legislators should be contacted for necessary action.

Additionally, Thomas inquired about the upcoming Assembly session.

Her medical team has indicated that she needs to remain in the ICU for an additional week, as reported by her social media team.

On Saturday, she was successfully taken off the ventilator at the private hospital where she is receiving care.

However, her medical team continues to closely monitor her condition as her rib injury heals.

On the same day, Thomas was able to sit on her hospital bed.

The incident occurred on December 29 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which is managed by the CPIM-controlled Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). Thomas tripped over a barricade near the VIP section after greeting the state Culture Minister, Saji Cherian, during a Guinness World Record attempt involving approximately 12,500 participants.

This event has led to a blame game, prompting authorities to investigate the organization of the event.

Moreover, the situation has become controversial due to numerous complaints regarding inadequate security measures for such a large-scale event. Three individuals have been arrested but later released on bail, and the GCDA has faced criticism for its perceived negligence.

Thomas, who is the widow of veteran Congress leader P.T. Thomas, represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency. She entered the political arena following her husband's passing in December 2021 and won the by-election with a margin exceeding 25,000 votes, challenging expectations of a Left victory.

Having been a former student leader during her college years, Thomas is recognized for her courteous demeanor and well-informed speeches in the Assembly. As the sole female Congress legislator in the current Assembly, she occupies a crucial and symbolic role within her party.
