Stage Collapse in Kochi: Blame Game Emerges as Uma Thomas' Health Shows Improvement

Kochi, Dec 30 (NationPress) The health condition of Congress legislator Uma Thomas, who incurred serious injuries after a 15-foot fall from a makeshift stage at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday evening, has reportedly improved slightly, according to medical reports. In the meantime, a blame game has erupted regarding the accident as authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
The unfortunate event occurred during an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for a mass dance performance in Kochi. Local law enforcement has filed cases against the event organizers and the construction company responsible for the stage. The injured legislator was immediately taken to a private hospital where medical professionals are addressing injuries to her head and lungs.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, managed by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), is also under scrutiny. GCDA Chairman and seasoned CPI-M leader Chandra Pillai attributed the accident to failures in the stage's construction. An initial evaluation by the Fire and Engineering departments confirmed negligence by the organizers.
Kerala Law Minister P. Rajeev, who visited Uma Thomas in the hospital, provided an update on her condition. 'Her health has improved slightly. A specialized medical team has assessed her situation, and additional examinations will follow. Authorities are investigating potential lapses in the event's organization, and necessary action will be taken if any are identified,' Rajeev stated.
The incident occurred when Uma Thomas, after greeting State Culture Minister Saji Cherian, stumbled over a barricade near the VIP area and fell.
Uma Thomas, the widow of the late Congress stalwart P.T. Thomas, represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency. She ventured into politics following her husband's death in December 2021 and won a by-election by a substantial margin of over 25,000 votes, defying expectations of a Left victory. The Left Front, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, launched a vigorous campaign against her by nominating interventional cardiologist Joe Joseph and claimed they would breach the Congress stronghold in Thrikkakara.
Notably, P.T. Thomas had represented the Thrikkakara constituency since 2016 and had also won the 2021 elections before his passing in December 2021.
A former student leader during her college days, Uma has made a significant impact in the Assembly with her courteous demeanor and well-informed speeches. She is the only female Congress legislator in the current Assembly, holding both a symbolic and influential role within the party.
As investigations progress, lingering questions arise about safety standards and accountability for the tragic incident that has left a rising political figure injured.
