Condition of Injured Kerala MLA Uma Thomas Shows Signs of Improvement Despite Critical State

Kochi, Dec 31 (NationPress) The medical board attending Congress legislator Uma Thomas on Tuesday indicated a slight improvement in her condition. She is stable but continues to be in a critical state.

The head of the medical team at the private hospital, where she is currently on a ventilator, mentioned that her sedation dose was lowered at 6 a.m. on Tuesday to evaluate her progress.

"After an hour, we assessed her condition. She was awake and responsive to our treatments. The brain injury has lessened, but her lungs continue to be a concern. An X-ray reveals slight improvement, but preventing infection is challenging due to her three fractured ribs and the presence of blood in her lungs. We are administering antibiotics and plan to keep her on the ventilator for another 24 hours before attempting a gradual weaning process," the medical head elaborated.

Uma’s son, Vishnu, shared a touching moment with her in the morning. "When I called her 'Amma,' she opened her eyes. I asked her to lift her hands and legs, and she complied with both requests. She extended her hand when I asked for a handshake," Vishnu recounted.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, managed by the CPI(M)-controlled Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). Uma Thomas stumbled over a barricade near the VIP pavilion after greeting State Culture Minister Saji Cherian.

This mishap occurred during a Guinness World Record attempt for a mass dance performance involving approximately 12,500 participants. The accident has triggered a blame game, with authorities initiating an investigation into the event's organization.

Reports suggest that the organizers collected substantial fees from participants, many of whom have expressed dissatisfaction with the event's management. Police have detained two individuals linked to the event management company and the firm responsible for the makeshift stage's construction.

Joseph Alex, convener of the Congress-led UDF in the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency represented by Uma Thomas, accused the GCDA of negligence. "The program needed police and corporation approval. What was the GCDA monitoring committee doing during the stage construction? The accusations against the organizers are superficial. GCDA officials should also face accountability," Alex emphasized, adding that he has lodged a formal complaint with local police.

Uma Thomas, the widow of Congress stalwart P.T. Thomas, represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency. She entered politics following her husband's passing in December 2021, winning a bypoll with a remarkable margin of over 25,000 votes, defying predictions of a Left victory.

A former student leader during her college days, Uma is recognized for her polite demeanor and well-researched speeches in the Assembly. As the only woman Congress legislator in the current Assembly, she possesses a significant and symbolic role within her party.
