Congress Legislator Uma Thomas Moved from Ventilator After Serious Injury

Kochi, Jan 4 (NationPress) Six days following her fall from a height of 15 feet at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Congress's first-time legislator from Kerala, Uma Thomas, was taken off a ventilator at a private medical facility on Saturday.

The medical team overseeing Uma has stated that she will continue to be monitored closely as her rib injury is in the process of healing.

On Saturday, Thomas was able to sit up on her hospital bed.

Dr. Krishnanunni Polakulathhe, the head of her medical team, has consistently expressed optimism about her recovery, although he noted concerns regarding her rib injury, which has led to breathing difficulties, stating that transitioning her off the ventilator would be challenging.

On Saturday afternoon, the medical team successfully completed this transition, but Thomas will remain in intensive care for several more days.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which is managed by the CPIM-controlled Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). Thomas fell after tripping over a barricade near the VIP section after greeting the state Culture Minister, Saji Cherian.

This accident occurred during a Guinness World Record attempt for a mass dance event that included approximately 12,500 participants. It has ignited a blame game, prompting authorities to investigate the organization of the event.

Additionally, this incident has sparked controversy due to numerous complaints regarding inadequate security measures during such a significant event.

Three individuals have been arrested and subsequently released on bail, while the GCDA, facing criticism for its negligence, suspended a female engineer for failing to fulfill her responsibilities.

Thomas, the widow of veteran Congress leader P.T. Thomas, represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency. She entered politics following her husband's passing in December 2021 and won the bypoll with a margin exceeding 25,000 votes, contradicting predictions of a Left victory.

A former student leader during her college years, Thomas is recognized for her respectful demeanor and well-researched speeches within the Assembly. As the only female Congress legislator in the current Assembly, she occupies a significant and symbolic role within her party.
