Kolkata, Jan 1 (NationPress) Aniket Mahato, a key figure in the protest movement by junior doctors in West Bengal against the horrific rape and murder of a female junior doctor at the state-operated R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024, has officially resigned from his position as president of the board of trustees of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), the organization at the forefront of the movement.
In his resignation letter to the board of trustees, Mahato expressed that while the choice was difficult, he felt compelled to resign from his role.
Although Mahato didn’t specify the exact reasons for his resignation, he indicated his dissatisfaction with certain decisions linked to the formation of the executive committee of the organization.
Mahato pointed out that the executive committee was established without a clear connection to the board of trustees and disregarded legal guidance. He labeled the decisions surrounding the committee’s formation as “undemocratic” and “inconsistent” with the movement's goal of seeking justice for the victim.
He also mentioned that he had consistently voiced concerns regarding the process of forming the executive committee, but his objections went unheeded.
Sources reveal that the WBJDF's executive committee includes 37 members, and friction has arisen between the board of trustees and the executive committee concerning the distribution of responsibilities.
However, Mahato refrained from elaborating on his resignation when contacted by the media. He stated that since he had stepped down prior to the formal voting on the new committee, it would be inappropriate for him to comment on ongoing internal matters.
Mahato mentioned that the WBJDF initiated the movement regarding the R.G. Kar case after garnering overwhelming support from the public. “Now it is up to the front to determine the future course of action,” he concluded.
