Kolkata, Nov 1 (NationPress) In a shocking incident, a young man was brutally killed by members of a local club in the Kamarpukur region of West Bengal’s Hooghly district, allegedly over the consumption of three boiled eggs during a social gathering, according to police reports on Saturday.
The tragic demise of the 26-year-old has sparked significant shock and anger within the community. Authorities have detained one individual on murder charges.
As per police statements, a social event was held at a club in Kamarhati on Friday to celebrate the immersion of Jagaddhatri Puja. However, tensions escalated during the community feast.
Initial investigations suggest that Ramchandra Ghoshal (26), hailing from Lahabazar in Kamarpukur, was reportedly assaulted by his companions after he consumed three boiled eggs, exceeding the one allocated per member. This sparked a heated argument which quickly turned violent.
While Ramchandra was on his way home, another altercation occurred, during which he was allegedly beaten to death.
Local sources indicated that Ramchandra, the only son of Tarak Ghoshal, was an active member of the neighborhood club. Police reports mentioned that Raju Maiti, one of the accused, transported the victim to the Sridham waiting room in Kamarpukur and left him there after the attack.
Residents later discovered Ramchandra unconscious and rushed him to the Kamarpukur Rural Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.
In response to the incident, police presence has been bolstered in the area to avert further unrest.
“The primary suspect has been apprehended and is currently being interrogated to uncover additional accomplices involved in the assault. A formal case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing,” stated a senior officer from the Hooghly district police.
Community members expressed disbelief and outrage over the murder, labeling it a senseless act driven by a trivial matter. They criticized law enforcement, noting that a police outpost is situated just meters from where the conflict erupted.
Moreover, despite the installation of numerous CCTV cameras in the vicinity for continuous surveillance several months ago, such a crime still transpired, casting doubt on the effectiveness of local policing.
