These individuals were specifically targeted by three recently-arrested operatives from the Bangladesh-based extremist group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for the purposes of indoctrination and subsequent incorporation into the group's sleeper cells.
According to sources, these three detained JMB members employed a systematic approach in their attempts to influence the youths.
Initially, the individuals were approached on a personal basis and invited to attend programs that were purportedly designed for religious education.
“The primary aim of these gatherings, as per sources, was to manipulate these youths and later integrate them into local JMB sleeper cells. During these events, participants received books and videos that, while cloaked as religious texts, covertly promoted messages of jihad.

Findings indicate that encrypted messages retrieved from the mobile devices of Aazmal Hossain and Saheb Ali Khan, who were captured in the Birbhum district, revealed links solely to associates of Bangladesh-based extremist groups such as JMB, Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HUT), and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).
However, similar coded messages found on Molla's phone indicated regular communication with individuals from Pakistan as well as connections to the Jammu & Kashmir-based militant organization Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind.
Molla was apprehended in Paturi village, located in the minority-populated area of Diamond Harbour, just one day after the other two were detained in Birbhum.
Recently, the Union Home Ministry received intelligence reports highlighting the alleged involvement of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in inciting violence and vandalism in the minority-heavy Murshidabad district amid violent protests against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act.
The names of JMB, HUT, and ABT were mentioned in this intelligence assessment. However, given the geographic locations where most tensions and violence have occurred, particularly in Samserganj, the likelihood of ABT's involvement appears more plausible.
