During a media conference following a Cabinet meeting, Education Minister Ashish Sood disclosed that under the ‘Mukhyamantri Khel Protsahan Yojana’, Olympic Gold Medalists will be awarded Rs 7 crore each, while Silver and Bronze medalists will receive Rs 5 crore and Rs 3 crore respectively.
Previously, Olympic and Paralympic medal winners were compensated with Rs 3 crore for Gold, Rs 2 crore for Silver, and Rs 1 crore for Bronze.
Additionally, the reward for Asiad medals has been raised from Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 3 crore for Gold, from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore for Silver, and from Rs 1 crore for Bronze, Sood mentioned.
For Commonwealth Games medalists, the Delhi government has set the reward amounts at Rs 2 crore for Gold, Rs 1.5 crore for Silver, and Rs 1 crore for Bronze.
The Minister further stated that each medal winner in the National Games will receive a reward of Rs 11 lakh.
Furthermore, it was decided that Gold Medal winners at the Olympics and Asian Games will be granted Group A positions within the Delhi government. Silver and Bronze medalists from other competitions will also be offered government jobs in appropriate roles.
This recent announcement by the Delhi government nearly doubles the existing reward thresholds for medalists in global contests.
“Previously, each Olympic and Para-Olympic medalist received Rs 3 crore, Rs 2 crore, and Rs 1 crore for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals respectively,” stated Sood.
Emphasizing support for Delhi’s athletes to enhance their training for international success, Sood noted that up to Rs 5 lakh will be allocated for coaching and training assistance to qualified athletes starting from Class 6.
“The sports-related incentives unveiled in the Cabinet meeting are part of the Delhi government’s initiative to foster the comprehensive development of youth,” he stated, branding the decisions as ‘historic’.
