New Delhi, March 31 (NationPress) Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq on Monday vehemently opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, labeling it a direct assault on the Muslim community.

During a discussion on the contentious Amendment bill, the SP lawmaker pledged to resist it both within the confines of Parliament and on the streets, asserting that he would pursue legal action if necessary.

Barq remarked to IANS, "This bill is explicitly targeted against the entire Muslim community. We have firmly contested it in Parliament, and we will persist in our opposition when it returns to the House. If required, we will amplify our voices from Parliament to the streets, and even approach the judiciary for justice on behalf of the 40 crore Muslims in this nation."

The disputed Waqf (Amendment) Bill was assigned to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) in August 2024. The committee’s detailed 655-page report was delivered to both Houses of Parliament earlier this month, amidst significant resistance from numerous political factions and Muslim organizations.

This Waqf (Amendment) Bill has sparked extensive discussion, with Opposition parties and Muslim groups expressing concerns over its provisions. While the government contends that the bill seeks to enhance the management of Waqf properties, critics perceive it as an effort to undermine the rights of the Muslim community.

On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, the SP lawmaker also conveyed his greetings to the public, using the opportunity to reaffirm his dedication to justice and the rights of the Muslim community.

"I extend my heartfelt greetings to everyone on Eid-ul-Fitr. Today is a moment of joy and gratitude. After observing the fasts of Ramadan, we have reached this blessed day. We thank Allah for this occasion, offering prayers not only for ourselves but also for justice, for our rights, and for the progress of this country," he stated while addressing an Eid gathering.
