New York, April 20 (NationPress) By merging artificial intelligence (AI) with electrical recordings of brain activity, scientists have successfully monitored the language exchanged during discussions and the related neural activity across various brain regions, as detailed in a recent study.

The group from the Department of Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States explored how our brains interpret language during authentic conversations.

“Our goal was to comprehend which brain regions activate when we engage in speaking and listening, and how these activities correlate with the particular words and context of the dialogue,” stated lead author Jing Cai in a publication in Nature Communications.

Utilizing AI, the team examined how our brains manage the interactive nature of real conversations. They integrated sophisticated AI, specifically language models akin to those powering ChatGPT, with neural recordings obtained from electrodes implanted in the brain.

This innovative approach enabled them to simultaneously observe the linguistic features of conversations alongside the corresponding neural activity in various brain regions.

“By analyzing these synchronized data streams, we could illustrate how specific elements of language—such as the spoken words and the context of the conversation—were depicted in the dynamic brain activity patterns during dialogue,” Cai explained.

The researchers discovered that both speaking and listening during a conversation activate an extensive network of brain regions located in the frontal and temporal lobes.

Interestingly, the patterns of brain activity are highly specific, varying according to the precise words used, as well as the context and sequence of those words.

“We also noted that certain brain regions are engaged during both speaking and listening, indicating a partially shared neural foundation for these activities. Ultimately, we identified distinct changes in brain activity when individuals transition from listening to speaking within a conversation,” the authors remarked.
