New Delhi, Dec 29 (NationPress) Artificial Intelligence (AI) is unlikely to take the place of professional mental health care, but chatbots such as ChatGPT could play a role in diminishing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. This is especially true for individuals who may be reluctant to pursue traditional, face-to-face support, according to a recent study.

The research team from Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Australia conducted a survey involving 73 participants who utilized ChatGPT for personal mental health assistance. They looked into how ChatGPT was used and how effective it was perceived to be in relation to stigma.

“The results indicate that the belief in the tool's effectiveness is significant in alleviating concerns regarding external judgment,” shared Scott Hannah, a Master of Clinical Psychology student at ECU.

Stigma poses a significant obstacle to seeking mental health assistance. It can exacerbate symptoms and prevent individuals from obtaining the help they require.

The research highlighted two types of stigma: anticipated stigma, which involves the fear of judgment or discrimination, and self-stigma, which is the internalization of negative stereotypes that can undermine confidence and deter help-seeking.

Participants who viewed ChatGPT as effective were more inclined to use it and reported a decrease in anticipated stigma, indicating lower fear of being judged.

As AI technologies become increasingly prevalent, individuals are turning to chatbots for confidential, anonymous discussions about their mental health challenges.

“These findings imply that, even though AI tools like ChatGPT were not originally intended for mental health purposes, they are gaining traction in this area,” he remarked.

While engaging with AI may facilitate opening up, the research team cautioned that anonymous digital tools come with important ethical implications.

“ChatGPT is not designed for therapeutic use, and recent studies have shown that its responses can occasionally be inappropriate or incorrect. Therefore, we urge users to approach AI-driven mental health tools with a critical and responsible mindset,” stated Hannah.

The team underscored the necessity for further research to explore how AI can safely augment mental health services.

Point of View

I view this study as a significant step towards understanding how technology can assist in addressing mental health challenges. The findings suggest that AI platforms like ChatGPT could offer a valuable resource for individuals who are otherwise reluctant to seek help, thereby reducing stigma and increasing access to support.
