Annually observed on June 7, World Food Safety Day aims to prevent, identify, and address public health risks linked to unsafe food.

This year's theme, ‘Food safety: science in action,’ highlights the significance of scientific knowledge in minimizing illnesses, reducing expenses, and saving lives.

“On this World Food Safety Day, we unite to promote awareness regarding the vital role of safe and hygienic food in protecting health and minimizing foodborne illnesses. Food is the energy source that sustains us daily. By prioritizing food safety, we are ensuring the health and well-being of families everywhere,” Nadda remarked in a social media post on platform X.

“The theme for this year celebrates the ways in which science and technology enhance the quality and safety of our food at every stage,” he further commented.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) emphasized on X that “science plays a critical role in guaranteeing that the food you consume is safe.”

“From laboratories conducting quality tests to research guiding food standards, the power of science enables us to make informed choices. Choose wisely, eat safely!” it added.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), consuming food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, or harmful chemicals like heavy metals can lead to over 200 diseases.

For safer food, the global health organization advises individuals to maintain cleanliness, keep raw and cooked food separate, thoroughly cook food, store it at safe temperatures, and utilize safe water and raw materials during preparation.

“On World Food Safety Day, let’s pledge to adhere to safe food practices that protect health and avert foodborne diseases. Safe food is a collective responsibility and is the cornerstone of a healthier, stronger, and safer future,” stated Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Food and Public Distribution, on X.
