EV retail sales hit record August high of 2.98 lakh units, penetration at 12.3%
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's electric vehicle (EV) retail sales surged 52.9 per cent year-on-year to an all-time August record of 2,98,448 units in 2026, with overall market penetration climbing to 12.3 per cent from 9.5 per cent a year earlier, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Tuesday, 8 September 2026. All four EV segments — two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial vehicles — posted their highest-ever August retail figures, marking a structural inflection point for India's electric mobility transition.
Electric Two-Wheelers: Segment Leader With Deepening Penetration
Electric two-wheeler retail sales rose 67.05 per cent year-on-year to 1,83,204 units in August, though they dipped 10.35 per cent from July's 2,04,362 units — a seasonal pattern typical of non-festive months. TVS Motor retained pole position with 48,938 units, followed by Bajaj Auto at 41,114 units and Ather Energy at 28,757 units. Notably, Ola Electric retailed 13,852 units, a decline of approximately 29 per cent year-on-year, underscoring a competitive reshuffling at the top. Electric two-wheelers now command a segment penetration of 10.7 per cent, up from 7.7 per cent in August 2025.
Three-Wheelers and Commercial Vehicles: The Structural Shift
Electric three-wheeler sales rose 25.28 per cent year-on-year to 79,846 units, with penetration reaching 65.3 per cent — up from 56.6 per cent a year ago — confirming that this segment has effectively gone electric. Bajaj Auto led with 13,833 units, followed by Mahindra Last Mile Mobility at 12,806 units and TVS Motor at 4,415 units.
The electric commercial vehicle (ECV) segment was the standout performer, with retail sales nearly tripling year-on-year to 4,702 units from 1,631 units in August 2025 — the single highest monthly figure ever recorded for the category. Segment penetration jumped to 5.18 per cent from 2.06 per cent a year earlier. Tata Motors led the ECV market with 1,416 units, ahead of Euler Motors at 849 units and Sany Heavy Industry India at 605 units.
Electric Passenger Vehicles: New Entrants Join the Race
Electric passenger vehicle (PV) sales climbed 51.89 per cent year-on-year to 30,696 units, with penetration improving to 7.6 per cent from 5.8 per cent in the year-ago period. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) retained market leadership at 13,158 units, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra at 6,464 units and JSW MG Motor India at 4,622 units. New entrants added competitive depth: VinFast Auto India retailed 2,199 units while Tesla India Motors and Energy sold 116 units in its maiden August showing.
What FADA Said: Beyond Subsidies
FADA President Sai Giridhar described August 2026 as 'the biggest-ever August for electric mobility in India.' He highlighted the ECV category as the 'clear standout,' noting it had 'touched an all-time monthly high of 4,702 units — the single best month in our entire series — nearly trebling year-on-year to a 5.18 per cent share, as fleet electrification moves decisively from pilots to purchase orders.'
Giridhar also pointed out that electric two-wheelers maintained penetration above 10 per cent even in a non-festive month — a threshold previously associated only with peak demand periods. He attributed the momentum to structural factors rather than policy incentives alone: 'This is no longer a subsidy story; it is running-cost economics, expanding charging infrastructure and maturing consumer confidence, supported by PM E-DRIVE and progressive state policies.'
What Comes Next
This comes amid growing policy tailwinds, including the Centre's PM E-DRIVE scheme and state-level EV incentives, which analysts say are shifting consumer calculus from upfront cost to total cost of ownership. With the festive season beginning in October, industry observers expect EV retail volumes to test new monthly highs across segments. The trajectory of Ola Electric's recovery and Tesla India's ramp-up will be closely watched as competitive dynamics in the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments continue to evolve.
