India auto retail sales hit record 25.37 lakh units in September, up 31.8%
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's domestic automobile retail sales surged 31.82 per cent year-on-year to an all-time high of 25,36,920 units in September 2026, driven by festive demand and a favourable base effect, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on 6 October 2026. The industry recorded its best-ever September, with five of six vehicle categories posting all-time monthly highs for the month.
Key Developments
On a month-on-month basis, retail sales rose 4.69 per cent from August. The first half of FY27 also logged record retail sales of 1,55,12,319 units, up 20.77 per cent year-on-year — a figure FADA considers a more reliable gauge of underlying demand.
However, FADA cautioned that the headline 31.82 per cent annual growth figure should be read with care, as September 2025 sales were suppressed by consumer deferrals ahead of the GST 2.0 rollout, making the year-on-year base unusually low.
Segment-wise Breakdown
Two-wheeler sales led volumes, rising 33.08 per cent year-on-year to 17,90,188 units. Passenger vehicle sales climbed 32.10 per cent to 4,27,213 units, while commercial vehicle sales grew 37.62 per cent to 1,03,557 units — crossing the one-lakh mark in September for the first time.
Three-wheeler sales rose 22.25 per cent to 1,32,570 units, tractor sales gained 13.75 per cent to 76,906 units, and wheeled construction equipment sales jumped 38 per cent to 6,486 units.
EV Penetration Hits New High
Electric vehicles posted a standout month: total EV retail sales across all categories reached an all-time monthly high of approximately 3.34 lakh units, pushing overall EV penetration to around 13 per cent. Within the passenger vehicle segment alone, EV penetration climbed to 8.45 per cent.
Notably, alternative-fuel vehicles — including EVs, hybrids, and CNG — accounted for 41 per cent of passenger vehicle retail sales in September, nearly matching petrol vehicles at 41.27 per cent. This near-parity marks a structural inflection point for India's passenger vehicle mix.
What FADA Said
FADA President Sai Giridhar described September 2026 as 'the best-ever September in Indian Auto Retail,' while cautioning that the 31.82 per cent year-on-year growth was 'the most base-distorted print of the year.' He pointed to record first-half sales, the 4.69 per cent month-on-month rise, and approximately 17 per cent growth in the first five months of FY27 — excluding the distorted September base — as the more meaningful indicators.
Outlook for October and Beyond
Dealer sentiment remains firmly positive: 75.57 per cent of dealers expect October sales to grow, with only 4.98 per cent anticipating a decline. Demand deferred during Pitru Paksha is expected to convert into deliveries during Navratri and Dussehra, and 63 per cent of dealers already report rising booking pipelines.
For the broader October–December quarter, 78.28 per cent of dealers project growth, while roughly 4 per cent foresee a decline. FADA described the near-term outlook as 'cautiously optimistic,' with festive demand conversion, affordability, and inventory levels identified as the key variables to watch.
