India auto retails hit record 25.91 lakh units in July, up 26% on-year
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's auto retail sector logged its strongest-ever July performance in 2025, with total sales reaching 25,91,138 units — a year-on-year jump of 25.89 per cent, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Thursday, 6 August. Crucially, every single vehicle category posted its best-ever July numbers simultaneously for the first time on record.
Record-Breaking Numbers Across All Categories
Two-wheeler (2W) retails led the charge at 18,18,289 units, up 28.25 per cent year-on-year — the first time the segment has crossed the 18-lakh mark in a July. Passenger vehicle (PV) sales reached 4,16,555 units, growing 19.13 per cent and breaching the 4-lakh threshold in July for the first time ever.
Commercial vehicles (CV) came in at 99,666 units, up 24.04 per cent — the highest July on record, edging close to the one-lakh mark. Three-wheelers at 1,33,778 units grew 16.16 per cent, with EV penetration at a notable 65.08 per cent. Tractors surged 28.10 per cent to 1,17,349 units, reflecting catch-up Kharif sowing activity.
Rural Demand Drives the Headline Numbers
The rural-urban split tells a deeper story. Rural 2W sales grew 28.59 per cent year-on-year, edging past urban's 27.86 per cent on an annual basis. Rural PV growth of 24.72 per cent decisively outpaced urban's 15.76 per cent. In the CV segment, rural demand expanded 29.37 per cent against urban's 19.36 per cent, confirming that goods-movement demand is broadening well beyond the metros.
However, the sequential (month-on-month) picture diverged. Urban 2W rose 5.04 per cent while rural fell 6.16 per cent on a month-on-month basis, as erratic rains, flooding across western and central belts, and the inauspicious Aadi/Shravan window in southern markets kept rain-fed rural walk-ins subdued.
What Dealers and Industry Bodies Said
FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar noted that the overall result is 'the strongest July growth in the series outside Covid-distorted base years — while holding almost flat (-0.16 per cent) over a strong June.' He added: 'That a seasonally soft, erratic monsoon July ranks as the 12th-highest retail month of the 151 months since January 2014 — a list otherwise dominated by festive months — speaks to the structural depth of the India growth story.'
On the passenger vehicle side, dealers credited GST 2.0 affordability measures, new model launches, and OEM scheme support — with 44.05 per cent of dealers reporting that OEM schemes supported July bookings. Consumer hesitation around the E20 fuel transition also reportedly nudged buyers towards CNG, hybrids, and EVs, according to FADA.
Outlook: Festive Season Confidence at Record High
For the August-September-October festive period, dealer confidence is reportedly the strongest the FADA survey has recorded in recent history. The association, however, has counselled reading the coming months' prints carefully, given base effects and the evolving monsoon trajectory. Tractor growth of 28.10 per cent — with rural growth at 28.83 per cent — points to agricultural demand recovery that could sustain rural momentum into the festive quarter.
