Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) is focused on enhancing healthcare infrastructure and promoting indigenous innovation, stated Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Thursday.

The minister highlighted that the PMSSY initiative is a component of a larger movement to fortify India’s healthcare infrastructure.

"The scheme aims to deliver quality medical services while endorsing indigenous innovation in health-focused R&D," he remarked during the inauguration of the upgraded super-specialty Neurosurgery and Cardiovascular Surgery Building Block at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) located in Thiruvananthapuram.

He underscored that the new initiatives by the PM Narendra Modi government are intended to render quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all segments of society.

Commending SCTIMST for becoming a hub of excellence in both healthcare and research and development, Dr Singh emphasized that the institute, which operates under the Department of Science and Technology, exemplifies a “whole-of-government” approach.

He noted that the institute encourages collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Highlighting the necessity of merging modern medical breakthroughs with traditional healthcare methods, Dr Singh pointed out the significance of digital health initiatives, artificial intelligence in diagnostics, and genome-based therapies.

The minister also acknowledged India’s advancements in biotechnology, mentioning the successful development of the indigenous Covid-19 vaccine, the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer, and innovations in gene therapy.

"India has evolved from being a mere importer to a frontrunner in preventive healthcare, earning global recognition in bio-manufacturing and medical research," he asserted.

He further stressed the need for ongoing investments in healthcare R&D to ensure that India remains a leader in medical advancements.

Dr Singh encouraged scientists and healthcare professionals to engage in collaborative research projects with international institutions to broaden knowledge and expertise.

He acknowledged that while India has made significant strides in addressing the rural-urban health disparity, healthcare accessibility continues to pose challenges.

He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing medical services through the establishment of new AIIMS institutions and improved medical colleges, guaranteeing affordable and high-quality treatment.

He also advocated for utilizing telemedicine and mobile health units to expand healthcare services to remote areas, ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to everyone.
