New Delhi, Sep 16 (NationPress) The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) stands as both a witness and a contributor to India’s development trajectory towards Viksit Bharat by 2047, stated Amarendu Prakash, Chairman and Managing Director of SAIL, on Tuesday. He emphasized that the Maharatna firm is progressing its green steel initiative through hydrogen-based steelmaking trials.
During SAIL’s 53rd Annual General Meeting (AGM), Prakash underscored the company’s robust performance despite global challenges and its strategic plan for future expansion.
“Steel is frequently referred to as the backbone of modern civilization – strong, resilient, and enduring. In a similar fashion, our company has faced trials, shaped by obstacles, and fortified by experience,” he asserted.
He reiterated SAIL’s essential role in nation-building by supplying steel to various sectors such as infrastructure, railways, defence, and energy.
“SAIL steel is integral to India’s growth narrative,” he stated.
Following the guidance of the National Steel Policy 2017, the company is embarking on the next phase of its journey, where future projects will incorporate green technologies, efficient logistics, and customer-focused solutions right from the outset.
This initiative will be rooted in technology, digital advancement, sustainability, and most importantly, the people.
Highlighting the organization’s dedication to sustainability, Prakash revealed that SAIL is progressing its green steel journey through hydrogen-based steelmaking trials, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), biochar injection, and renewable energy projects.
“Climate change poses a significant challenge for our industry. The global community is on the verge of a green transition, and SAIL is determined to lead this movement,” he remarked.
“SAIL is prepared for the future. I am confident that SAIL possesses the resilience, capability, and vision to emerge stronger and reach new heights,” he added.
The government-owned Maharatna company has maintained its collaboration with the national defence sector by supplying approximately 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for the country’s advanced frontline warships INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, which were recently integrated into the Indian Navy fleet.
By developing and supplying critical-grade steel for the Indian Navy, SAIL has significantly contributed to import substitution and defence self-reliance, directly supporting the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives, thus reducing India's reliance on imported special quality steel for defence needs.
