New Delhi, June 6 (NationPress) Starlink, the affordable satellite internet initiative founded by Elon Musk, has successfully obtained a satcom licence in India, paving the way for its commercial operations, which may launch later this year or early next year.
According to trusted sources, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has granted the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) permit to the American firm.
In the coming days, the trial spectrum is also expected to be allocated to Starlink, as the company has met all security compliance stipulations set forth in its letter of intent (LoI).
Starlink is now the third satellite communications company to receive a GMPCS permit, following Eutelsat's OneWeb and Jio-SES, enabling them to operate within the nation.
Before the allocation of the spectrum to the satellite-based internet service, Starlink must gain approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and has already submitted the necessary documentation.
The initial approval from the DoT was granted after Starlink agreed to adhere to the new national security regulations for satellite communication operators.
The Department outlined 29 additional requirements, which include mandatory interception and monitoring systems, the use of local data centres, mobile user terminal location tracking, and localisation mandates, among others, for existing and prospective satcom licensees.
In April, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with senior executives from Starlink to discuss the company's investment strategies for India.
"I had a productive meeting with a delegation from Starlink, featuring Vice President Chad Gibbs and Senior Director Ryan Goodnight. We discussed their innovative technology platform, current partnerships, and potential investments in India," Goyal shared on X following the meeting.
This meeting occurred as major domestic telecom players, such as Airtel, engaged with the US company regarding the potential launch of satellite telecom services in India. Vodafone Idea has also indicated that it is in discussions with Starlink to deliver satellite communication services in the country.
Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has emphasized the necessity of satellite internet in India, highlighting its importance for rural communities.
