India tops Asian Games boxing: BFI chief hails 3 golds, 6-medal haul
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India clinched its most successful Asian Games boxing campaign in terms of gold medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, finishing with six medals — three gold and three bronze — to finish first among all nations in the boxing standings, ahead of traditional powerhouses Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and China. Boxing Federation of India (BFI) president Ajay Singh called the achievement a matter of immense national pride, highlighting a transformation in Indian boxing over the past decade.
A Decade of Transformation
Ajay Singh, speaking to reporters after the boxing contingent's arrival in New Delhi, underlined the scale of the turnaround. 'Ten years ago, when I became BFI president, we were 44th in the world. Today, we are at the top of the world, ahead of everyone,' he said. Singh cautioned against overconfidence, urging the team to continue working on its weaknesses ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
India's previous best at the Asian Games in boxing came at Guangzhou 2010, when the country won two gold medals. The six-medal tally at Aichi-Nagoya surpasses that benchmark both in gold count and overall breadth of weight categories represented.
Medal Winners at Aichi-Nagoya 2026
Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg), Parveen Hooda (65 kg), and Ankush Panghal (80 kg) won gold medals, while Kapil Pokhariya (90 kg), Narender Berwal (+90 kg), and Priya Ghanghas (60 kg) secured bronze. Borgohain, who had her silver from Hangzhou 2023 upgraded to gold, became only the second Indian woman after Mary Kom — who achieved the feat at Incheon 2014 — to win an Asian Games gold medal in boxing.
Singh also highlighted a significant shift: India's medals this time spanned the heavier weight categories, breaking a long-held perception that the country only excels in lighter divisions. 'Earlier, it was said that India performs only in lighter weights, not in heavy weights. This time, we have won so many medals in heavy weight,' he noted.
Commonwealth Games Record and Global Rankings
The Asian Games triumph follows an equally emphatic run at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, where Indian boxers won 10 medals, including a record seven gold medals — the most gold medals ever won by any country in boxing at a single edition of the Commonwealth Games. Singh noted that India had also finished second at the Asian Championships and third at the World Championships in the same cycle, reflecting a consistency across major global events.
Road to LA 2028 Olympics
Under the BFI's selection criteria, all Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games medallists will be automatically entered as main entries in their respective weight categories for the World Boxing Championships 2027, to be held in Kazakhstan. That event will serve as the first qualifying tournament for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Singh said the federation's focus will now shift to identifying and addressing each boxer's technical weaknesses to ensure India enters the Olympics as medal contenders. 'Consistently, India has performed very well. And we feel that if we continue to prepare in this way, we will definitely win medals in Olympics,' he said.
With India now firmly established at the top of Asian boxing, the question is whether this momentum can be sustained through the Olympic cycle — and converted into podium finishes on the sport's biggest stage.
