Brazilian forward Rodriguinho announced himself to Indian football in stunning fashion, netting five goals as SC Delhi demolished Defenders FC 7-0 in Group C of the 135th Durand Cup at Birsa Munda Stadium, Ranchi, on Friday, 7 August. The result handed SC Delhi their second consecutive win in the group stage, propelling them to the top of the standings with six points from two matches.

Rodriguinho's Record-Breaking Debut

Making his first start for the club, Rodriguinho delivered one of the most electric individual displays seen in recent Durand Cup history. He completed a hat-trick inside the opening 13 minutes, becoming the focal point of SC Delhi's relentless attacking play from the first whistle.

His opening goal was a moment of individual brilliance — he controlled a pass on his chest, spun past his marker, and dispatched a composed left-footed finish into the bottom corner. He doubled the tally barely a minute later, converting a perfectly weighted through ball from Mohammed Aimen with a clinical first-time left-footed effort. The hat-trick was completed when Yanglem Sanatomba Singh squared a low cross across the six-yard box and Rodriguinho arrived unmarked to slot home.

He added his fourth in the 89th minute, curling a brilliant left-footed effort into the far corner from the edge of the area, before rounding off a memorable evening with his fifth in the fifth minute of added time — a composed left-footed strike that sealed the rout.

SC Delhi head coach Tomasz Tchórz made two changes to his starting lineup, bringing in Rodriguinho and Colombian forward Duvan Mina in place of Joseph Sunny and the suspended Ashutosh Mehta. Tchórz introduced Colombian substitute Juan Sebastian Peña and Mohammed Kaif at the break. Peña made an immediate impact, testing Defenders FC goalkeeper T.S. Priyashan twice from the edge of the penalty area, though the Sri Lankan custodian produced smart saves on both occasions.

Defenders FC showed greater defensive organisation after the restart, denying SC Delhi clear-cut chances for long stretches. Their first shot on target came only in the 85th minute through L.C.P.K.
