Deepti Sharma's 49 rescues India vs Zimbabwe in 1st T20I, leads 1-0 series
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Deepti Sharma played a match-winning 49 off 37 balls to rescue India from a precarious 19 for 4 and guide the side to a comfortable chase of 115 against Zimbabwe in the first T20I at Raipur on Friday, 16 October. India won with four wickets in hand and 26 balls to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The Rescue Act
With India teetering at 19 for 4, Deepti walked in and immediately shifted the momentum. Her innings featured eight fours and was built on calculated aggression in the powerplay. She added a crucial 82-run fifth-wicket stand with debutante Niki Prasad, who remained unbeaten on 39 and struck the winning boundary to seal the chase.
Deepti was named Player of the Match for her efforts — a recognition that reflected not just the runs scored but the context in which they came.
What Deepti Said
Speaking after the match, Deepti credited her composure to experience in high-pressure situations. 'I'm really pleased because I am used to these kinds of situations, and I'm glad that I could bat a little early in the powerplay. My mindset was that I had to finish the game, and that's how me and Niki were playing,' she said.
The all-rounder outlined her batting philosophy in simple terms: 'I had a clear (plan) that I had to play a few shots early when it's on my radar. So I calculated according to that, and my mindset is pretty simple: I have to play in my areas.'
Deepti also credited franchise tournaments for sharpening her game. 'Pretty much helped me. WPL, the Hundred and all that stuff helped me to bat a little early and assess the condition well while chasing. And when you are mentally ready, you can adapt (to) the situations, and that's how I do it,' she added.
Niki Prasad's Debut Composure
Niki Prasad, playing her first international match, struck six boundaries and appeared entirely unfazed by the magnitude of the occasion. 'I think I was well-prepared. I knew that when I walked in, my job was simply to take the game deep and see it through, and that's exactly what I focused on out in the middle,' she said.
Niki recalled how the partnership developed: 'We were just focused on building a partnership. Once we got going and stabilised the innings, we started discussing which bowlers to target and where we could take calculated risks.'
On the playing conditions, Niki noted that heavy dew aided strokeplay even as the pitch slowed. 'There was definitely a lot of dew, which made the ball travel much faster off the bat. At the same time, the pitch started slowing down a bit and keeping slightly low, but Deepti and I adapted well to the conditions,' she said.
Series Outlook
India now lead the three-match T20I series 1-0, with the second game scheduled at Raipur on Sunday. The chase, though eventually comfortable, exposed a fragile top order — an area the management will likely address ahead of the remaining fixtures. Niki's assured debut, however, provides a significant positive to build on.
