Leeds, June 23 (NationPress) India has challenged England with a formidable target of 371 runs to clinch the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after being bowled out for 364 in 96 overs during their second innings at Headingley on Monday. The heroes for India were KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, who scored 137 and 118, respectively.
Rahul displayed his typical calmness to top the charts with 137, marking his ninth Test century with a remarkable total of 18 boundaries. Meanwhile, Pant unleashed his aggressive style to score 118 – his eighth century in Tests – with the help of 15 boundaries and three sixes.
Before their phenomenal 195-run partnership at Headingley, Rahul and Pant had also achieved centuries together in a previous partnership at The Oval back in 2018. Pant made history by becoming the first wicketkeeper and the fifth Indian batter to score two hundreds in the same Test match abroad.
He is now the second wicketkeeper-batter to achieve centuries in both innings of a Test match, following Andy Flower in 2001. In a surprising twist, Pant opted for a celebration inspired by British footballer Dele Alli, moving away from his signature handspring.
However, after Rahul and Pant's dismissals, India faced another batting collapse, losing their last six wickets for a mere 31 runs. Josh Tongue played a pivotal role in dismantling India’s lower order, emerging as England’s top bowler with 3-72 in 18 overs, claiming all three wickets in a single over.
The final session kicked off with Rahul and Karun Nair hitting five quick boundaries before Brydon Carse struck, forcing Rahul to chop onto his stumps. Nair soon followed, caught by Chris Woakes after returning a simple catch.
As Tongue continued his impressive spell, India’s innings concluded when Prasidh Krishna was dismissed by Shoaib Bashir, leaving England in high spirits as they geared up for the chase.
Brief scores:
India 471 and 364 in 96 overs (KL Rahul 137, Rishabh Pant 118; Josh Tongue 3-72, Brydon Carse 3-80) lead England 465 by 370 runs
