New Delhi, July 9 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has come forward to express his backing for the struggling batter Karun Nair, insisting that the team management should provide the experienced domestic run-scorer with at least one more chance in the ongoing Test series against England.
Nair, who made his return to the Indian Test squad following a remarkable domestic season, has exhibited elegance at the crease but has struggled to convert promising starts into significant scores.
In his remarks on his YouTube channel, Chopra delved into Nair’s challenging international journey and stressed the need for his return to be given a fair opportunity.
“I firmly believe that Karun Nair deserves another chance, as this represents his last shot,” Chopra stated. “He previously played, achieved a triple century, and was then dropped. That situation was somewhat unjust.”
Having been sidelined despite registering a historic 303* in 2016, Nair faced challenges in rejoining the Test squad. However, a transition to Vidarbha and a series of consistent performances paved his way back into contention.
“He amassed a considerable number of runs and returned to the team, pleading for a second chance. He moved to Vidarbha, and cricket granted him that second chance. Nevertheless, this narrative will eventually conclude, and that moment is now,” Chopra cautioned.
In the second Test at Edgbaston, the Indian team made a surprising decision by dropping promising young batter Sai Sudharsan and elevating Nair to the pivotal No. 3 position. Despite showcasing his potential, the 32-year-old failed to capitalize.
“In the initial two matches, we’ve witnessed flashes of his ability, but his run tally remains low,” Chopra observed.
Advocating for a more lenient evaluation approach, Chopra recommended giving Nair a more extended opportunity. “I would advocate for at least one more Test match. This would total six innings, and a decision can be made after that,” he elaborated.
“When extending chances to players, it’s better to offer one extra game rather than one less. Comebacks are challenging. Provide him ample opportunities to either fail or succeed.”
Chopra also commented on another change in India’s XI, with Nitish Kumar Reddy replacing Shardul Thakur. While Reddy contributes all-round value, Chopra felt he lacks the same bowling prowess.
“While Reddy can both bowl and bat, he is not as impactful a bowler as Shardul Thakur,” he remarked.
As India heads into the third Test at Lord’s, the series stands level at 1-1, with the match commencing on July 10 at Lord’s.
