Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that the touring side will not play any warm-up fixtures ahead of the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, opting instead for a dedicated pre-series training camp to acclimatise to subcontinent turning conditions. The decision was disclosed on Wednesday in an interview with cricket.com.au.

Series Schedule and Context

The five-match Test series is scheduled to begin on 21 January in Nagpur and conclude on 3 March in Ahmedabad, marking Australia's longest tour of India in 50 years. The series kicks off less than two weeks after the conclusion of Australia's home Test campaign against New Zealand, leaving the squad with a compressed preparation window.

Camp Over Tour Games: McDonald's Reasoning

McDonald pointed to Australia's approach ahead of the 2023 India tour as a template. On that occasion, the squad held a training camp in Alur, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, where local spinners — including Baroda off-spinner Mahesh Pithiya — were brought in to replicate the bowling angle of former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Australia also used the UAE as a preparatory base ahead of their two-Test tour of Sri Lanka.

'We feel as though we've got enough time to immerse ourselves in those conditions. We won't be taking on a practice game. It'll just be more around the location. We've got a couple of options there,' McDonald said. 'You case those locations — you want a connection in terms of conditions and climate. We believe we'll get that right in terms of where we go, it just hasn't been confirmed yet.'

Squad Selection in Flux

McDonald indicated that the squad travelling to India may differ from the one that finishes the New Zealand series, with certain players requiring additional specialist preparation. Fringe Test players including Matthew Kuhnemann, Todd Murphy, Cooper Connolly, Peter Handscomb, and Matthew Renshaw are reportedly in consideration, as Australia seek their first Test series victory on Indian soil since 2004.

'There'll be some players that we need to put a little bit more prep into, and that'll start in Australia also, balancing out Big Bash commitments,' McDonald noted. He added that some players could be arriving from the IPL, county cricket, or domestic Australian cricket, meaning preparation stages will vary across the group.

Warm-Up Plans for South Africa and Ashes

While Australia are foregoing tour games in India, McDonald confirmed the intention to play warm-up fixtures ahead of their three-Test series in South Africa and the 2027 Ashes in England — contingent on Australia not qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. 'We're not against practice games as long as they can fit in... We feel like a game on a Test venue against a quality opponent potentially is the best thing for that UK tour,' he said. The coach stressed that a compressed international calendar remains the principal obstacle to scheduling such fixtures consistently.

The camp location — whether the UAE or a venue inside India — is yet to be finalised. With Australia chasing a historic series win in India and a tight turnaround from the New Zealand Tests, the quality and specificity of their pre-tour preparation could prove decisive in a series that carries significant World Test Championship points implications.
