Jeddah, May 16 (NationPress) Al Ittihad is now the official champion of the Saudi Pro League after their title-clinching win against Al Raed on Thursday night. The Jeddah-based club, who last celebrated championship glory two seasons ago, has regained the title with two full match weeks remaining. Goals from Steven Bergwijn, Danilo Pereira, and Abdulrahman Al Obud secured the pivotal win in Buraidah. Unsurprisingly, the announcement that the coveted top-flight trophy is returning to the port city along the shores of the Red Sea ignited exuberant celebrations at King Abdullah Sports City.
“This title holds immense significance for me. I joined Al Ittihad to achieve victories and to continue winning. This is my goal as a player. I am grateful; it adds another title to my career. I have won everywhere I’ve been! One more league, the Saudi league,” stated former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho in an interview with the SPL media team.
2018 FIFA World Cup champion N’Golo Kante expressed his happiness after securing the trophy. "Honestly, I am filled with joy. This is a new league; last year was challenging, but this season we have led from start to finish. It’s truly fulfilling to have achieved this together," Kante remarked.
Under the leadership of Laurent Blanc, the team staged a comeback to win 3-1 in Buraidah, clinching the top-flight trophy with two rounds remaining. This victory places Al Ittihad nine points ahead at the top, ensuring that even if Al Hilal matches their points, they would still fall short due to a weaker head-to-head record.
“I am incredibly happy and proud. Winning a league is never easy; thus, I feel immense joy. Winning it alongside my friends brings me great pride. As you can see, it feels like we’re playing at home every week - it’s fantastic!” exclaimed former Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.
"I am thrilled because it’s my first title. Achieving this in just five months here is remarkable, so significant. My family and I are overjoyed! This is unbelievable, simply unbelievable!" added former Barcelona midfielder Unai Hernandez.
