Charleston, April 2 (NationPress) Three American players made their mark by being the initial competitors to secure their spots in the Round of 16 at the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open. Madison Keys, Amanda Anisimova, and the defending champion Danielle Collins all advanced to the third round on Tuesday evening.
The current Australian Open titleholder, Keys, took one hour and 42 minutes to overcome Caroline Dolehide with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4), finally triumphing on her eighth match-point opportunity.
Keys initially held four match points while leading with a set and a break at 6-3, 5-4. Despite this, Dolehide fought back, saving those chances and two more in the next game, managing to level the score in the second set. Keys had to maintain her composure in the tiebreaker before ultimately defeating her fellow American, according to WTA reports.
“I believe I became a bit too passive, and Caroline truly elevated her game. It’s challenging when you feel like you’re close to the finish line and it then slips away,” remarked Keys, who clinched the event in 2019 against Caroline Wozniacki, marking her first clay-court title.
Defending champion Collins commenced her title defense by defeating fellow American Robin Montgomery with a score of 6-3, 6-1 in just 1 hour and 9 minutes, marking her seventh consecutive victory in Charleston.
“You always aspire to play well, but it’s not always achievable. Today it was, and I was executing my shots effectively. I felt my timing was good. It’s essential to adhere to your process and the elements you’re focusing on,” stated Collins.
Additionally, the eighth seed, Anisimova, advanced by defeating the 2021 champion Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Anisimova reached the semifinals at this event in 2022, which remains her best performance at any WTA 500 event. She secured her most significant career title at the WTA 1000 Doha in February.
Meanwhile, Maria Sakkari, who was a semifinalist last year, bounced back from a sluggish start at 0-3 to defeat Canadian wildcard Marina Stakusic, 6-3, 6-2, in one hour and 28 minutes.
American Hailey Baptise also progressed, winning against Australia’s Olivia Gadecki with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
