Charleston, April 4 (NationPress) Anna Kalinskaya pulled off a surprising victory against Madison Keys, the Australian Open champion, marking her first time back in the quarterfinals in Charleston since 2023.

Kalinskaya triumphed with a score of 6-2, 6-4 against the No. 2 seed, capitalizing on an inconsistent performance by the World No. 5 to achieve her first Top 10 win in ten months and reach her second quarterfinal of the season.

Having previously reached a career-high ranking of No. 11 last October after a promising 2024 season that included a WTA 1000 final in Dubai and a WTA 500 final in Berlin, Kalinskaya entered Charleston with a 4-7 record for the season, and had only secured back-to-back wins at one tournament, Singapore in February (where she had to retire in the semifinals), as per reports from WTA.

Next, Kalinskaya will face Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, who defeated No. 5 seed Daria Kastkina in the night match with a score of 6-3, 7-6(7).

In other matches, No. 1 seed Pegula overcame Ajla Tomljanovic, securing a place in her fifth quarterfinal of the season with a score of 6-3, 6-2. This match was a stark contrast to their previous encounter in Austin last month, where Pegula won after a string of five games.

Pegula's upcoming challenge is against Danielle Collins, the defending champion, who defeated the seventh seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, in a highly anticipated match on the Althea Gibson Club Court.

Despite a shaky start, Collins, 31, managed to hold her ground and move into the elite eight for the third time in four appearances.

In another matchup, Yulia Putintseva faced Amanda Anisimova for the second time in four years, experiencing an early exit from the tournament once more. After a 6-1, 6-2 loss in the second round to Anisimova in 2022, the Kazakh athlete fell again in the Round of 16 with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

Anisimova, a semifinalist in 2022, confronted only one break point during the one-hour and 16-minute match. She will now face local favorite Emma Navarro, who reached the quarterfinals for the first time in her hometown after overcoming a set-and-break deficit against Ashlyn Krueger, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a two-hour and eight-minute match.

Additionally, third seed Zheng Qinwen from China took two hours and 21 minutes to defeat Belgium’s Elise Mertens, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. She is set to compete against ninth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who dispatched Dianna Shnaider in just 54 minutes with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
