Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina Dominate to Reach Miami Open Quarterfinals
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Miami, March 24 (NationPress) Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina showcased their exceptional talent as they secured spots in the Miami Open quarterfinals, each dominating their matches in straight sets at Hard Rock Stadium.
Fifth-seeded Pegula was the first to take the court, delivering a masterful performance against Jaqueline Cristian. The American star was unassailable on her serve, facing no break points, and capitalized on four out of her 13 break opportunities to clinch a 6-4, 6-1 victory in just over an hour.
This triumph not only enhanced Pegula's head-to-head record against Cristian to 2-0 but also marked her fifth consecutive appearance in the Miami quarterfinals. She is now the first player to achieve this milestone since Agnieszka Radwanska (2010–2014), and only the third American woman to reach five straight Miami quarterfinals, joining the ranks of Chris Evert and Serena Williams.
“I felt I played exceptionally well today. My serving was strong, particularly in the first set. I managed to return effectively in the second set, gaining an early break that I maintained. I felt I loosened up a bit and applied pressure, and the last few games went by quickly. I was able to keep that pressure on, so I’m really pleased with my performance,” Pegula commented after her victory.
Later, third-seeded Rybakina matched Pegula's level of dominance in her match against Australian qualifier Talia Gibson. The reigning Australian Open champion faced no serious threats on her serve and achieved a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win in one hour and four minutes.
Despite the loss, Gibson's journey was noteworthy, as she became only the third player to reach the round of 16 at both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season as a qualifier or lucky loser, following in the footsteps of Gisela Dulko and Varvara Gracheva.
Rybakina now leads their rivalry with Pegula 5-3, having won the last four encounters over the past seven months.
“Overall, my serving has been solid throughout the matches I've played here. In crucial moments, I’ve maintained an aggressive stance and succeeded in key moments. So far, it’s been effective,” Rybakina remarked regarding her performance leading to the quarterfinals.
Looking ahead to her upcoming match, she stated, “I definitely need to serve effectively; that’s my main weapon. I also have to stay fresh and move well, as the conditions here are a bit faster than during our last match at Indian Wells. The ball doesn’t bounce as much, which poses a bit of a challenge, but I’m determined to give my best and hopefully win the match.”
