Manchester, May 24 (NationPress) The head coach of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, asserts that the numerous alterations, both on and off the pitch, the Red Devils have experienced over the last six months have led to the club's most disappointing league finish in its history.
United's 0-1 defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed that they will miss out on any European competition for the 2025/26 season. Amorim considers the outcome to be ‘harsh’, believing his side performed better overall.
"It was incredibly challenging; it remains challenging. Losing that match felt unfair. I believe we were the superior team, having created more opportunities. We conceded a goal just before halftime, and despite our efforts in the second half, it was tough because, as I mentioned prior to the match, losing a final is hard to accept," Amorim stated during his concluding pre-match press conference of the season.
The Portuguese manager took over from Erik Ten Hag in December and attempted to implement a different style of play, favoring a three-at-the-back formation, which ultimately did not yield positive results. After a grueling season, Amorim is eager to redirect United's current course in the upcoming year.
"These past six months have been extremely difficult; there have been numerous changes, not just for me but for the entire club. We made extensive internal changes, which can typically take three to five years to fully implement. We altered coaches mid-season and shifted our playing style.
"This season has been a real struggle. Now we need to focus on enjoying this moment, looking forward with optimism. We understand what needs to be done; I have a clear vision of how I want to play. Despite the criticisms, I am excited about the potential for change," he added.
As the final game of the season approaches against Aston Villa on Sunday, Amorim indicated that he plans to rest some players to avoid compromising next season with injuries.
"We must be cautious in certain situations, like with Leny. We faced challenges during the last home game before the final against West Ham, and we need to manage these situations wisely to not jeopardize next season. Nevertheless, we aim to win the game and will assemble a competitive squad," Amorim remarked.
