New Delhi, May 14 (NationPress) England’s fast bowling star James Anderson has praised Virat Kohli as one of the most exceptional batters in the history of Test cricket. He expressed his belief that India has a vast reservoir of talent ready to step up in the wake of the retirements of seasoned players.
Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, concluding a remarkable career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches, which includes an impressive 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.
He retired as the fourth-most successful Test captain in history, trailing only Graeme Smith (53 wins), Ricky Ponting (48 wins), and Steve Waugh (41 wins).
With his 30 Test centuries, Kohli ranks as the fourth-most successful Indian batter, behind Sachin Tendulkar (51 hundreds), Rahul Dravid (36), and Sunil Gavaskar (34). He also holds the record for the most Test double hundreds by an Indian, with seven.
The 36-year-old cricketing icon had a fierce rivalry with Anderson, accumulating 305 runs off him at an average of 43.57 over 36 innings, while being dismissed by the bowler on seven occasions.
“They are great players. With Sharma's retirement, there will be a new captain. Kohli is one of the greatest Test batters ever. There are big shoes to fill, but India's squad is filled with an abundance of talent. Just look at the IPL; they are introducing players into Test cricket who are highly aggressive and fearless,” Anderson remarked on TalkSport.
Kohli’s retirement follows shortly after Rohit Sharma made an unexpected announcement to end his career in the longest format.
The departures of Kohli and Rohit come just over a month before India embarks on a five-Test tour of England, which will kick off a new cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC).
“This year is significant with the Ashes approaching, but it’s crucial to build momentum. Reflecting on my career, I’ve noticed that often, 18 months before an Ashes, management and players tend to focus too much on that instead of addressing immediate challenges. India will be a formidable opponent, even on home soil. They are a robust team,” Anderson stated.
