New Delhi, July 1 (NationPress) Two-time world champion from Grenada, Anderson Peters, has been officially ruled out of the upcoming Neeraj Chopra Classic, a prominent World Athletics category A javelin event, owing to an ankle injury, as stated by the organizers on Tuesday.
In his place, Poland’s Cyprian Mrzyglod, currently ranked 16 in the world, has been confirmed as the replacement in the final lineup for this one-day competition, which is classified as a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet, scheduled to be held at the Sri Kanteerva Stadium in Bengaluru.
“Anderson Peters has been ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury he sustained during his previous competition. Poland’s Cyprian Mrzygłód has been named as his replacement in the final lineup,” the organizers posted on X.
Known for his remarkable throws exceeding 90m, with a personal best of 93.07m, Peters boasts two world titles achieved in 2019 and 2022. He is also the reigning gold medallist from the Pan American Games. At 27 years old, he stands out as the most significant athlete missing from this competition.
Peters is the second athlete to withdraw from the event due to injury; previously, India’s Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena was also ruled out due to an ankle injury, with fellow Indian javelin thrower Yash Vir Singh stepping in to replace him in the final entry list for this athletics meet.
The Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra will headline this competition named in his honour. The Neeraj Chopra Classic is co-organized by Neeraj himself, in partnership with JSW Sports, the Athletics Federation of India, and World Athletics.
This event will feature the 2016 Olympics gold medallist Thomas Rohler among other top stars, making it a prominent one-day javelin throw competition in Bengaluru.
The NC Classic 2025 will serve as a vital qualification event for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, taking place from September 13 to 21, although Neeraj, the reigning world champion, has already secured his spot.
