Pune, April 6 (NationPress) The Indian women’s tennis squad is preparing for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group I matches, with the seasoned Ankita Raina at the helm. Joining India are teams from Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, The Republic of Korea, New Zealand, and Thailand, all set to compete in Pune.
Ankita, currently ranked 300 in singles as of late March, expressed her enthusiasm about hosting the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group 1 games at home. She remarked, “I’m thrilled that the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group 1 games are taking place in Pune, and it’s a privilege to lead the Indian team. Having represented my country for over a decade, it’s truly a dream come true for me.”
“This tournament is conducted at the highest level, and hosting it in India presents a tremendous opportunity for young players to witness top 300-ranked athletes in action. We, as an Indian team, extend our gratitude to the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association for bringing this esteemed event to our country. The influx of high-caliber international tennis is a boon for the sport,” she added.
Ankita is part of a five-member team that includes Sahaja Yamalapalli, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Vaidehi Chaudhari, and Prarthana Thombare, with the promising Maaya Rajeshwaran serving as a reserve player.
“When representing one’s nation, everyone strives to perform their utmost on the court, and we are committed to doing just that. Traveling with the Indian team for tournaments offers a unique experience, and I believe it will greatly enhance our teamwork,” Ankita stated.
In discussing how she maintains her composure during high-pressure matches, Ankita highlighted the role of meditation in her life. She shared, “I was introduced to meditation at around 18 or 20, and it has undoubtedly assisted me in transitioning from junior to senior levels, where the challenges become more demanding. Competing against seasoned players and navigating difficult scenarios has taught me vital strategies for critical match moments. Therefore, meditation has significantly helped me stay composed.”
When addressing the competition India will encounter in the upcoming week in Pune, Ankita, inspired by the legendary Sania Mirza, emphasized the importance of respecting all opponents. She explained, “Every player here is highly skilled, and we cannot underestimate anyone. Last year, I faced Lulu Sun from New Zealand, who not only played in the Wimbledon qualifiers but also reached the semi-finals. This demonstrates the caliber of players competing here.”
