Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) President and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Kesineni Sivanadh on Sunday, 7 June announced that the Andhra Premier League (APL) will commence on 9 June 2025 in Visakhapatnam, calling it the 'cricket festival of Andhra' and a vital platform for unearthing talent from rural communities and economically weaker sections of the state.

Tournament Format and Venues

This edition of the APL will be hosted across three venues — Visakhapatnam, Kadapa, and Mangalagiri in the Amaravati capital region. Each venue will host six days of matches, with the final scheduled at Mangalagiri. A total of seven teams will compete, the same number as last season, with each side playing eight matches during the tournament.

What the ACA President Said

'We are proud to announce the cricket festival of Andhra. The Andhra Premier League will start from June 9 in Visakhapatnam. Last year we successfully conducted the APL, and we are excited to host it again this year,' Sivanadh said while addressing the media ahead of the tournament.

Andhra Pradesh Education Minister Nara Lokesh has been invited to attend the final at Mangalagiri as the chief guest. 'We hope this festival will bring cheers to cricket lovers across Andhra Pradesh,' Sivanadh added.

Focus on Rural Talent Development

A central theme of this year's APL is grassroots development. Sivanadh appealed to media organisations to actively promote the league, emphasising that players from rural areas and poor communities stand to benefit significantly from the exposure. 'With the support of the media, we can make the APL an even bigger success,' he said.

This comes amid a broader push by state cricket associations across India to replicate the Indian Premier League's franchise model at the regional level, creating structured pathways for non-metro cricketers who may otherwise lack visibility.

The APL's return follows a successful previous edition, and the ACA's decision to retain the seven-team format signals stability in the league's structure. Notably, no new franchise has been added this year, suggesting the association is focused on consolidating quality over expansion. With matches spread across Visakhapatnam, Kadapa, and Mangalagiri, the tournament aims to build a cricket culture beyond Andhra Pradesh's urban centres.
