New Chandigarh, April 8 (NationPress) Priyansh Arya’s (103) outstanding first Indian Premier League (IPL) century, alongside Shashank Singh’s unbeaten half-century (52*) and a late flourish from Marco Jansen (34 not out), propelled the Punjab Kings to a formidable total of 219/6 in their 20 overs against the Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday.

This exceptional batting display enabled the Punjab Kings to set a new record for the highest score at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium during the tournament.

The 24-year-old Priyansh Arya achieved the fastest century against the Super Kings, reaching the milestone in just 39 balls, tying with Travis Head for the fourth-fastest century in IPL history. Notably, it was the second-fastest century by an Indian player in the league, following Yusuf Pathan.

The talented left-handed opener delivered a remarkable 42-ball innings, scoring 103 runs before being dismissed by Noor Ahmad. His innings featured seven fours and nine sixes as he dismantled the Chennai bowling attack.

Despite the high run tally, bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Ravichandran Ashwin managed to claim two wickets each.

Arya kickstarted the Punjab innings with a six off the very first ball bowled by Khaleel Ahmed, who dropped him on the subsequent delivery, allowing him to score 17 runs in the opening over.

Chennai retaliated quickly when Mukesh Choudhary dismissed Prabhsimran Singh (0) in the following over. Shreyas Iyer (9) looked promising but fell victim to Khaleel shortly after. Marcus Stoinis (4) faced disappointment as he was caught by Devon Conway off Ahmed's bowling.

Arya strove to stabilize the innings, continuing to dominate the bowlers. He concluded the power-play by hitting Ravichandran Ashwin for a four and two sixes. Ashwin showcased his skill by dismissing Nehal Wadhera (9) and Glenn Maxwell (1) in the same over, leaving the Punjab side at 83/5 after 8 overs.

From that point, Shashank Singh and Arya wreaked havoc on the bowlers, forming a 71-run partnership off just 34 balls. Arya was lucky to survive when he was caught at 79, as Mukesh Choudhary stepped on the boundary, resulting in a six.

He celebrated his century in style, hitting three consecutive sixes off Matheesha Pathirana before edging the next ball for four, bringing him to the three-figure mark. He became the second batter this season to hit a century, following Ishan Kishan’s unbeaten 106 against the Rajasthan Royals.

Arya soon exited after achieving his century, but Marco Jansen (34*) and Shashank continued the onslaught. The pair accumulated 65 runs for the seventh wicket, with Shashank reaching his third IPL half-century on the last ball of the innings.
