Ashleigh Gardner Reflects on Australia’s Impressive Year Following ODI Series Triumph Over New Zealand

Wellington, Dec 23 (NationPress) Ashleigh Gardner, who concluded a remarkable year with a match-winning performance in Australia’s 75-run victory against New Zealand in the third ODI at Wellington, reflected on her team’s dominance in 2024 and expressed enthusiasm for the forthcoming challenges, including the historic Women’s Ashes series.

Australia capped off a spectacular year with a 2-0 series sweep over New Zealand. This victory emphasized the prowess of the reigning ICC Women’s World Cup champions in 50-over cricket.

Gardner shared her insights on the team's accomplishments, highlighting the importance of their success in 2024. "It caps off a pretty good year for us," she mentioned at the post-match press conference. "After the World Cup, we had something to prove, and 50-over cricket is likely our strongest format. We were clinical in all matches. To finish the year with another trophy that has Australia written all over it is quite satisfying."

"We saw various players excel in different roles. Currently, the team is in a very positive place. We've engaged in extensive discussions, and now it’s about taking action.”

Gardner commended the squad's contributions, especially Annabelle Sutherland, whose consistent performances shone throughout the series. Sutherland’s contributions with both bat and ball were integral to Australia’s success, scoring 147 runs and taking three wickets, demonstrating her ability to perform under pressure.

"Watching Belsy (Annabelle Sutherland) excel with both bat and ball at number 5, breaking records as she consistently does, is inspiring. It's fantastic to see young players stepping up under pressure.

“For such a young player, she’s incredibly focused. The conversations we have on the field are straightforward. The communication is clear and concise about what we do well. Sometimes, when I’m at the other end and Belsy is on fire, it’s great to let her take the strike.”

Australia’s dominance in ODIs is evident through their impressive record in the ICC Women’s Championship. With 18 victories out of 24 matches and only three losses, they have set a standard for consistency in women’s cricket.

Gardner underscored the team’s dedication to excellence, stating, "Accumulating points over such a long period is significant. The ODI series we've participated in have been quite clinical. We always aim to win 3-0 in every series. Having lost only three times in 24-25 matches is quite an achievement."

Looking forward, Gardner expressed her eagerness for the upcoming Women’s Ashes, especially the historic day-night Test at the MCG.

"Playing at a venue like the SCG, which is my favorite ground in the world, is incredible. There’s immense history there, and we haven’t had many international games during my time with the team.

“Having the Ashes there is a fantastic way to attract crowds. And to finish it off with a day-night Test at the MCG is going to be a remarkable spectacle."
