Kolkata, Sep 11 (NationPress) As the highly anticipated India–Pakistan clash draws closer in the Asia Cup 2025, excitement is soaring. The two rivals are set to meet on Sunday in Abu Dhabi. Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has shared his thoughts on the broader conversation regarding governmental policies in sports, advocating for fairness across all disciplines.
India, who are the reigning champions following their 2023 victory, kicked off their tournament with an impressive nine-wicket win over UAE. Meanwhile, Pakistan is set to begin their campaign against Oman before facing India.
India's participation aligns with the Union Sports Ministry's guidelines, which allow matches against Pakistan in international and multilateral events, but prohibit them in bilateral sports events within each other's countries. This regulation permits Asia Cup matches but keeps standalone series off the agenda.
“Ultimately, it's a government decision. I have no comments on that. If they decide to play, they will, and if not, they won’t,” Bhutia remarked.
Nevertheless, he emphasized the need for consistency. “I only urge the government to ensure that their decisions embrace all sports, not just a selective few. Any policies made should aim for the betterment of the country and include all sports,” he added.
Beyond cricket, Bhutia is gearing up for another significant event later this year. The Sikkimese Sniper is slated to participate in the 10th edition of the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata on December 21, a prestigious World Athletics Gold Label race featuring elite Indian and international athletes alongside thousands of amateur runners on Kolkata’s famed Red Road.
Describing it as a milestone, Bhutia said, “This special 10th edition is an honor to be part of. I’m optimistic that Kolkata and Bengal will rally to participate, running for joy, unity, and health. I believe this edition will be as successful as its predecessors.”
He will be accompanied by Bengali film star Srabanti Chatterjee, who will motivate citizens to lead an active lifestyle through the race.
