Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 10 August called upon devotees to transform the annual Kanwar Yatra into an occasion for social responsibility, service, and collective cooperation, describing the pilgrimage as far more than a religious observance — a living embodiment of India's cultural traditions, discipline, and social harmony.

In a message addressed to the people of Uttar Pradesh, the chief minister said certain journeys in Indian tradition transcend religious ritual and become 'a living school of society, culture, discipline and public life.' He placed the Kanwar Yatra, held during the holy month of Shravan, firmly in that category, noting that it draws crores of devotees united in their devotion to Lord Shiva.

'In this journey, every Shiva devotee has one identity, Kanwariya,' Adityanath said, pointing to the saffron attire, the kanwar carried on the shoulder, and the unwavering faith that bind pilgrims together regardless of their backgrounds. He noted that while walking paces may differ, every devotee shares the same destination — offering holy water to Mahadev.

Pilgrimage as a Symbol of Equality

Adityanath emphasised that distinctions of caste, class, language, region, and economic status recede during the pilgrimage. 'Kanwar Yatra is a great festival of harmony and a living example of the principle of equality in Sanatan culture,' he said.

Invoking the mythological roots of the tradition, the chief minister recalled that Lord Shiva consumed deadly poison during the churning of the cosmic ocean to protect creation, earning the name Neelkanth. To cool the heat of the poison, the gods performed his abhishek with Ganga water — a belief that has since made the offering of Ganga water during Shravan particularly sacred.

He also expressed admiration for devotees, including persons with disabilities, who undertake the arduous pilgrimage without being deterred by hardship, calling their dedication the greatest strength of the Kanwar Yatra.

Government Arrangements and Civic Appeals

The state government, Adityanath said, is committed to ensuring every devotee completes the journey safely and with dignity. Arrangements along the routes include floral showers to welcome pilgrims, cleanliness drives, organised camps, safe drinking water, medical assistance, toilets, lighting, traffic management, and continuous monitoring through control rooms.

The chief minister also issued a series of civic appeals: he urged devotees to adopt environment-friendly kanwars and pledge to remain free of plastic. He called on people to give priority to ambulances and school vehicles travelling along the routes. 'Our small act of alertness can become great assistance for someone,' he said.

Adityanath framed the Kanwar Yatra as a vehicle for values that extend beyond religion. 'Austerity strengthens character, service improves society and unity makes the nation stronger,' he said. He added that faith, discipline, restraint, and service constitute the soul of the pilgrimage and reflect Lord Shiva's message of public welfare.

'The government is committed to your convenience and safety, but maintaining the dignity of this sacred tradition is the responsibility of all of us,' the chief minister said. With the Shravan season underway, all eyes will be on whether the administration's extensive arrangements translate into a pilgrimage that is both spiritually fulfilling and civically responsible.
