Birmingham, Aug 16 (NationPress) - In their inaugural match of the 2025/26 Premier League season, Aston Villa managed to secure a goalless draw against Newcastle United at Villa Park on Saturday, even after the home team was reduced to ten players in the second half.

Newcastle showcased dominance in the first half, crafting several goal-scoring opportunities. Just two minutes in, debutante Anthony Elanga had a golden chance, but his attempt was thwarted by Marco Bizot, who was also making his debut for Villa. Anthony Gordon, playing as a central forward instead of his usual left-wing position, played a key role in creating openings. Harvey Barnes located him unmarked with a cross, yet Gordon's header sailed over the bar.

Barnes remained active, delivering another cross that found Elanga at the far post, but his volley missed the target. Gordon later forced another save from Bizot with a deflected effort.

Villa, who appeared sluggish at the start, found their rhythm after halftime. Within just 90 seconds of the restart, Boubacar Kamara connected with a cross from John McGinn, but goalkeeper Nick Pope, chosen over new recruit Aaron Ramsdale, held onto the header. Morgan Rogers then set up Ollie Watkins, whose shot was comfortably saved by Pope.

The pivotal moment occurred in the 66th minute. Newcastle surged forward with Elanga delivering a perfect through ball to Gordon. As Gordon broke clear, Ezri Konsa fouled him, leading to a straight red card issued by referee Craig Pawson.

Newcastle sought a winning goal with their numerical advantage. Barnes struck a volley that was blocked by Matty Cash, while the visitors maintained pressure in a frantic finish. Nonetheless, Villa stood resilient, preventing the Magpies from finding the net.

Despite their territorial dominance and playing against ten men for over 25 minutes, Newcastle had to settle for a draw, while Aston Villa emerged with a hard-fought point to kick off their campaign.
