London, July 31 (NationPress) Former England captain Michael Atherton has delivered a stark warning to India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, emphasizing that a third consecutive Test series defeat would put the ex-opener under immense scrutiny just a year into his tenure.
Currently, India finds itself trailing 1-2 in the ongoing five-Test series against England, necessitating a victory in the final match at The Oval to avert yet another series loss. The team arrived in England following a 0-3 home defeat against New Zealand, in addition to a 1-3 setback in the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.
In a segment on Sky Sports ahead of the fifth Test, Atherton candidly discussed the high expectations surrounding Indian cricket. “They’ve suffered two series losses in a row. They lost at home to New Zealand 0-3 and faced a 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If they lose this series, then yes, he’s under pressure as a coach,” Atherton pointedly remarked, underscoring Gambhir’s increasing challenges.
“With all the resources at their disposal and a vast population, India is not a team that enjoys the luxury of patience. They are expected to secure victories every time they step onto the field. Therefore, suffering three consecutive Test series losses would pose significant issues for him,” he further elaborated.
The pressure mounts for Gambhir, who assumed the role of head coach in July of the previous year amid widespread optimism regarding a cultural transformation within the Indian team. Yet, the outcomes in the red-ball format have not favored him thus far.
In a bid to salvage the series, India made four alterations to their lineup for the final Test at The Oval. Dhruv Jurel stepped in for the injured Rishabh Pant as wicketkeeper, while pace leader Jasprit Bumrah was rested in favor of Prasidh Krishna.
Akash Deep, who was sidelined due to injury during the last Test, made his return, replacing Anshul Kamboj. Additionally, middle-order batsman Karun Nair was recalled in place of Shardul Thakur.
However, India's start to the match was far from ideal. After losing the toss for the fifth time in this series, captain Shubman Gill witnessed his openers - Yashasvi Jaiswal (2) and KL Rahul (14) - dismissed early amid overcast conditions. Gill and Sai Sudharsan then stabilized the innings with a determined partnership, guiding India to 72/2 at lunch on Day 1.
