Gardner Confident Australia Can Maintain Momentum After Impressive ODI Victory
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hobart, Feb 26 (NationPress) Australia is set to build on their momentum after a commanding victory in the opening ODI, aiming to reclaim dominance in the intensely contested multi-format series against India. Allrounder Ashleigh Gardner described the last match as a nearly flawless performance.
The ongoing multi-format series is currently tied at four points each, showcasing the competitive nature of the rivalry. After India previously took the lead by winning the T20I series 2-1, Australia made a strong comeback in the ODI segment with a decisive six-wicket triumph at Allan Border Field, leveling the series and boosting the team's morale.
Reflecting on Australia's journey, Gardner recognized both the standout moments and the inconsistencies, but underscored the importance of their recent performance.
“We have showcased some excellent cricket, but also had our share of struggles at times. Being able to combine our strengths, I felt that last match was a perfect display. The bowlers set the tone exceptionally well, and we chased the total with great confidence,” Gardner shared with reporters in Hobart.
“There was a sense of disappointment in the team for losing the T20 series, but we understand that when we concentrate on our game and perform well, we are the best team. We need to draw a lot of confidence from that,” she added.
Australia's resurgence came despite the absence of key players Ellyse Perry and Kim Garth, who are sidelined with quad injuries. Gardner expressed confidence in the squad's depth, noting that substitutes were poised to step up when needed.
As the team looks forward to the remaining ODIs at Bellerive Oval, Gardner emphasized the importance of adaptability, particularly as conditions are expected to vary from those in Brisbane.
“Heading into the one-day series, I believe this is one of our strongest formats. After our win in Brisbane, where we have a solid record, we focused on our own game plan and adapted as necessary. This approach will be crucial for tomorrow's match as well,” she stated.
“While we can analyze conditions prior to the match, it's vital to play what we see rather than hold onto preconceived notions about how the ground will behave. Bellerive typically offers a flatter pitch.”
“We recognize that India will be aggressive, as we witnessed during the World Cup. However, here in Australia, there tends to be more bounce, which can be advantageous for bowlers. Our ability to adapt will be key as we move forward,” she added.
On a positive note for India, captain Harmanpreet Kaur is expected to be fit for the upcoming match, despite having a knee issue that limited her participation in the last game. Allrounder Deepti Sharma confirmed that their captain is “fit and fine,” providing a timely boost ahead of this critical encounter.
While Australia is likely to retain the core of their winning lineup, they may consider local allrounder Nicola Carey for her familiarity with the conditions. Uncapped left-arm pacer Lucy Hamilton is also an option as the team looks to enhance their bowling strength.
