New Delhi, May 2 (NationPress) Australia has reaffirmed their dominance in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s T20I Team Rankings, extending their lead over England from 18 to 20 points following the latest update released on Friday.
The top eight teams remain unchanged, but Thailand has climbed to eleventh place, surpassing both Scotland and Papua New Guinea. The ICC also noted that the annual updates for the women's rankings will transition from October to May, aligning with the men's team rankings schedule.
Before this update, the rankings considered matches from October 2021 to September 2023 at a weight of 50 percent, while 100 percent was assigned to matches played afterward. After the latest update, the weightings will be 50 percent for matches between May 2022 and April 2024, and 100 percent for subsequent matches.
Despite being six-time champions, Australia did not reach the finals of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup held in Dubai. However, their impressive performance, including two 3-0 series victories against New Zealand and a clean sweep over England, has helped them earn two additional points, raising their rating to 299.
India remains firmly in third place with 260 points, while the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup champions New Zealand (253 points) and runners-up South Africa (243 points) both gained points to maintain their fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
The West Indies (240 points) experienced a two-point drop, Sri Lanka (228 points) lost one point, whereas Pakistan (220 points) gained one point, keeping their standings from sixth to eighth intact. Ireland has moved ahead of Bangladesh to claim the ninth spot with 194 points.
Thailand has made significant strides following their successes in a Quadrangular Series held in Hong Kong, which included China and Namibia, and a tri-series in Nepal alongside the Netherlands. These victories allowed them to gain a vital point and advance two spots.
The ICC highlighted that Sierra Leone and Kuwait emerged as the most improved teams post-update, each gaining seven rating points and advancing three positions to reach 34th and 46th, respectively.
Furthermore, four teams—Mexico, Czechia, Oman, and Ghana—have dropped out of the rankings due to not fulfilling the requirement of eight T20Is since May 2022, which is necessary to remain in the rankings. The ICC announced that the annual update for the ODI rankings will follow the conclusion of the ongoing 50-over tri-series in Colombo featuring Sri Lanka, India, and South Africa.
In another significant update, the ICC confirmed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken the position of the United States of America (USA) among the 16 teams holding ODI status for the upcoming 2025-29 cycle, effective from May 12. Thailand, Scotland, PNG, and the Netherlands will retain their ODI status based on their T20I performances.
Both Thailand and Scotland maintained their ODI status through their qualifications for the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, while PNG and Netherlands secured theirs due to their T20I rankings.
The UAE gained ODI status as the next highest-ranked associate member team at the time of the annual update to the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings. Teams must play at least eight ODIs over a span of three to four years to acquire or retain their ODI rankings.
