  • Expectations are high for new heroes to emerge.

New Delhi, Oct 28 (NationPress) Former assistant coach of India, Abhishek Nayar, believes that the pace and bounce found in Australian conditions will aid touring captain Suryakumar Yadav in rediscovering his batting form during the upcoming five-match T20I series that kicks off on Wednesday.

During last month's Asia Cup, which featured T20 matches, Suryakumar only managed to score 72 runs across seven games, with his top performance being an unbeaten 47 against their long-standing rivals in the group stage. Throughout the entire 2025 season, the experienced batter—often referred to as India’s Mr. 360—accumulated just 100 runs in 11 innings, maintaining a strike rate of 105.26.

Since becoming India’s T20I captain in July 2024, his performance has noticeably declined, with only 330 runs scored and two half-centuries to his credit.

“This tour of Australia presents a compelling scenario. While team success typically overshadows individual achievements, any decline in results will spark questions. As India's T20I Captain and a player who has held the top ranking in T20I cricket for an extended period, Suryakumar’s prolonged stretch without substantial scores at number three will surely invite internal scrutiny,” Nayar commented on JioStar.

The former batter also emphasized the importance of this series for the younger players on the team, many of whom will be playing in Australia for the first time.

“This T20I series in Australia will serve as a crucial test for our young talents, as it marks their inaugural experience competing in T20 International cricket against a team of this stature in such conditions. Although the environment might differ from what they will face in the World Cup, it offers a unique challenge and a prime opportunity for new heroes to shine. It’s a moment for several players to rise, build confidence, and gain momentum through runs,” he added.

Point of View

It is crucial to consider the broader implications of Suryakumar Yadav's performance in this T20I series. His form not only affects team dynamics but also sets expectations for the younger players stepping into international cricket. The Australian conditions may provide the perfect backdrop for a turnaround, and it is essential to monitor both individual and team performances closely.
